Follow the Yellow Brick Path. Or, Maybe the Natural Stone Walkway?

There seems to be a magical charm about having a walkway through a garden or around your home. Whether it leads to a wishing well or the garage, there is just something about following the yellow brick path or a natural stone walkway.

If you are looking at doing some upgrade landscaping around your home, creating a path from any Point A to any Point B, and beyond, will give your home a bit of a magical charm that will draw the attention of visitors and make your home stand out from your neighbors.

Choices of stone vary and depending on the landscape of your lawn, the purpose of the path, and what look you are trying to achieve, helps to make the decision on what type you should get.

Flagstone: This is a natural stone that is broken and fractured to create sections that are broad and flat. A good quality flagstone is very hard and very smooth. The edge of the flagstone will tell you the quality of the stone. Flagstones are made of limestone, marble, slate, and sandstone.

Natural Shape Stones: For an old-fashioned look of a cobblestone path, these are what you need. They create a nostalgic look and are sometimes mixed with Mexican pebbles or salmon stone to create a more dynamic design.

Pavers: These are mass manufactured to simulate a stone veneer to achieve a natural look of stone, but is more affordable. They come in a variety of shapes and different sizes.

Brick: Brick is probably one of the oldest ways of dressing up a pathway through a garden. You can even paint them yellow to recreate your yellow brick road!

An Outdoor Kitchen Extends Your Home’s Warmth

How many times this past summer when you were cooking out on the grill did you wish you had a comfortable place to sit? Or, did you wish you didn’t have to keep going in and out of the kitchen to get this and that? Wouldn’t your Saturday night dinner or Sunday afternoon cookout be much more convenient and easy if you could take your kitchen outdoors with you?

Well, we know that’s logistically impossible, but you can have an outdoor kitchen built. If your home doesn’t have a very large patio now, a professional contractor can build a patio for you and add an outdoor kitchen, too. They can be customized to your style, to fit your budget and not only bring the welcoming warmth of your home outdoors, but give your home an upgrade.

Before You Get an Outdoor Kitchen Built
There are a few things you want to think about and decide on having an outdoor kitchen added to your home.

Basic or Custom Design
The actual design of your outdoor kitchen is perhaps the utmost important aspect. A quality contractor will have basic designs, and they can customize it to your style. From the configuration to the cabinetry, the counters and what appliances you want to be installed.

Over the Top
Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may want to top off your outdoor kitchen design. Some options are a hard roof, a retractable awning or maybe over-sized pergola.

The Masonry
Another important choice you need to make is what type of material do want the grill to be made from? You want to consider the overall look and how it blends with your home as well as your style of cooking and entertaining. Some of the choices for a grill are brick, cinder block, and regular masonry stone. You will also need to make a decision about the material for the enclosure and what type of cooking method you want. Choices are gas range or a grill that uses charcoal or wood.

Appliances

These are the little extras that make an outdoor kitchen unique. You should consider what appliances you want in your outdoor kitchens such as a dishwasher, a refrigerator or a garbage disposal. You may want to add a wine cooler to your outdoor kitchen, as well.

After your outdoor kitchen is completed, you will have many hours, days, weeks and years to enjoy this style of outdoor living. With the right configuration and final touches, you may be able to enjoy cooking outdoors year round.
